Honest John Plain & Friends (Feedback Music FEED 2001 CD)

Thirteen outstanding tracks make this a truly great album from Honest John Plain and arguably the best post Boys album by any of the former Boys.

John is ably supported by an impressive cast of friends including Matt Dangerfield, Campino, Vom Ritchie, Robbie Rushton, Darrell Bath, Mark Duncan and many others. The album also benefits from a great production from John and who knows there may be a future for him in production if he wants!

John sings lead vocals on 5 tracks and demonstrates he really is a much better singer than many of us imagined when he was in the Boys. Campino from Die Toten Hosen sings lead on 3 tracks, Darrell Bath on 3 tracks and isn't it great to hear Matt's outstanding vocals once again on 1 track (and why wasn't it more!!!).

1. That's Not Love
Wow what a sensational way to open the album. An old Matt Dangerfield classic with a few amendments from John the song really bounces along with a cracking vocal from Matt. I apologise for repeating myself but this track really demonstrates what a huge talent Matt was/is and what a massive loss he is to the music industry. When The Boys record their next album (and they surely must!) this MUST be re-recorded by The Boys, it's that good!!

Phil Hanson said recently that the song is so good he has great difficulty getting past it! I would definitely agree that it's the best track on the album but the rest of the album is great too so you must all resist the temptation to keep replaying "That's Not Love" at least not until you've given the rest of the album a listen!!!!

2. Thinking Of You
When you've finally managed to get past "That's Not Love" the second track is co-written with John and his long time partner in crime Darrell Bath. Another great song with Campino, from Die Toten Hosen making his first appearance on lead vocal. I'm not a great fan of Campino's vocals but I think he does a really good job with "Thinking Of You". A lovely guitar solo in the middle really makes this one.

3. Operator
Another Plain/Bath song with some great vocals from John and a great acoustic guitar solo. The song sounds so laid back with loads of hooks in there and a wonderful speaking part in the middle:
"Well it's like this
I'm sat there trying to enjoy me drink
But you know what it's like when something's bugging you
I cast me eyes over into the corner and I see Honest
And I say to myself hey John what's wrong"

4. Vaya Con Dios
An old Pepper/Russell song with Darrell on vocals. A great version of "Vaya Con Dios" which rocks along in the wonderful style of the album.

5. Messed Up
Another Plain/Bath song with John on lead vocals and some lovely harmonies in the background. By this time I'll guarantee that you'll be starting to realise that this is one classic album!

6. Song For Me
For those of you who have bought the Captain Oi! re-release of "Alternative Chartbusters" will recognise this as being very similar to Jack Black's "You're The Other Man". Campino on lead vocals and another of my favourite tracks from the album.

7. Thin Ice
Yet another Plain/Bath song with John on lead vocals. Another standout track which demonstrates John great sense of humour and another mention for the Ramones:
"Play your stupid records when I wanna play Ramones
But don't you ever let me catch you with my girl
You're walking on thin ice
You better walk slow I'm gonna spell it out for you
There's something you must know
When it comes to my baby
That's where I draw the line
So keep well away
Cos that girl's all mine"

8. Marlene
Campino once again on lead vocals on an Honest John Plain composition. At well over 5 minutes it's the longest track on the album and it's about the break up of a relationship. It starts of relatively slowly before becoming progressively more manic.

9. Horrible Woman
Another Plain/Bath song with John on lead vocals with some very witty lyrics.

10. Sad Souvenir
A slow ballad type song originally written by Andrew Matheson about Johnny Thunders with some great vocals from John. He recently told me that he's not sure if Casino Steel co-wrote the song with Matheson as he may have failed to give Cas the writing credit he deserved ( He really is sorry Cas - Honest!!!). John made some minor amendments to the song and claimed a third of the writing credit!

11. Tune Up The Violins
Darrell Bath on lead vocals with this Plain/Bath composition. Probably my least favourite track on the album.

12. It's Like This
A lovely Honest John Plain instrumental played primarily on the acoustic guitar.

13. Sorrows
The album finishes off in great style with Darrell Bath on lead vocals on this great Andrew Matheson (and possibly Casino Steel!) composition with some minor amendments from John.

Well there you have it a great great album and very well packaged too. Could it have been even better, possibly not although from a personal point of view I'd love to have seen guest appearances from Duncan, Cas and Jack
