Punk Rock Rarities (Captain Oi! AHOY CD 120)

If ever a Boys' CD was eagerly awaited, this was the one. 22 tracks of either unreleased or long deleted material, each one illustrated with sleevenotes from Matt Dangerfield. The CD kicks off with the original version of "First Time" which features an additional verse and chorus, that would later be edited out when finally released due to the logic of the day that long songs couldn't be classed as "punk".

Fitting into that classification soon became less of a concern to The Boys, as they went on to demonstrate that they had the talent and ability to have a go at whatever musical style they chose, the proof of that being the eclectic collection of songs that are assembled here.
Ranging from the country and western of "Almost Persuaded" the minimalist "Jap Junk", the blues of "Lonely Cowboy" and "Lucy" or the power pop of "Walk My Dog", the overriding connection between the material here is that they're simply all great songs. The CD also includes many tracks from the "lost" third album, "Junk" which they demoed but never released due to contractual problems with their then label, NEMS (i.e. The Boys signed the worst contract ever in the history of music), and is yet another example of the bad luck that dogged The Boys throughout their career. To have material as good as this simply thrown away would make any band despair, and it's to their credit that they carried on for as long as they did. It should be noted that a few of the tracks have appeared before on the extremely hard to get hold of rarities CD, "Odds And Sods", however as I seem to be the only person in the world who managed to get hold a copy of it, it's fair enough to include them again here.
